Background of the Study
Telemedicine, the use of telecommunications technology to provide remote healthcare services, has grown rapidly in recent years. It allows healthcare providers to diagnose, treat, and monitor patients from a distance, offering increased accessibility and convenience, particularly in underserved areas (Adamu et al., 2024). Nurses, who traditionally serve as the frontline of patient care, play a critical role in the delivery of telemedicine services, including patient monitoring, remote consultations, and follow-up care.
At the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, the introduction of telemedicine has revolutionized patient care by enabling healthcare professionals to provide services to patients in remote locations without the need for physical visits. While telemedicine has the potential to expand access to healthcare, it also challenges traditional nursing roles, as it requires nurses to adapt to new technologies, manage virtual consultations, and engage in electronic patient monitoring.
This study aims to assess the effect of telemedicine on nurses' roles in patient care at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, focusing on changes in their responsibilities, the skills required, and the impact on patient outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Telemedicine has introduced significant changes in healthcare delivery, particularly for nurses who are now required to engage in remote patient monitoring and virtual consultations. However, the extent to which telemedicine has altered nurses' roles and the effectiveness of these changes in improving patient care remains unclear. At the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, it is important to examine how telemedicine has influenced nursing responsibilities, particularly in the context of communication, patient assessment, and monitoring. Nurses may face challenges in adapting to telemedicine technologies, and these issues could affect the quality of patient care. Therefore, this study will explore the role of nurses in telemedicine services and assess how this new form of patient care impacts their clinical practice.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of telemedicine on nurses' roles in patient care at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital.
2. To evaluate the changes in nursing responsibilities due to the introduction of telemedicine.
3. To explore the benefits and challenges faced by nurses when providing telemedicine services.
Research Questions
1. How has telemedicine impacted nurses' roles in patient care at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital?
2. What changes in nursing responsibilities have occurred due to the introduction of telemedicine?
3. What benefits and challenges do nurses encounter when providing telemedicine services?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: Telemedicine has not significantly impacted nurses' roles in patient care at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital.
2. H₀: There have been no significant changes in nursing responsibilities due to the introduction of telemedicine.
3. H₀: There are no significant benefits or challenges associated with nurses providing telemedicine services at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on nurses providing telemedicine services at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital. It does not include other healthcare professionals or patients outside this facility. Limitations may include the potential for variability in telemedicine usage across departments and the challenge of measuring patient outcomes in a telemedicine context.
